Plâtre Briard

Plâtre Briard
Plâtre Briard is a plaster-lime with a rich texture conceived for the renovation of the rural building in the Ile-de-France region.

Definition

The “Briard Plaster” is a plaster for exterior, traditionally manufactured from plaster, a little fat lime and some tasteful impurities which originally were due to the firing in kilns on “abutments”, in particular for the charcoal.

Application fields

The Briard Plaster is used for the renovation of the traditional building: plasters of Brie, of Bassée, Montois, of Provinois, Multien, Goële, Orxois regions. These walls can be homogeneous or composite (bricks, timber frame, nogged ragstone floated with mortar of fine sand or mortar lime, rubble plaster, gypsum stone,…).
The Briard Plaster can also be used in renovation on brand new walls or interiors.

Advantages

The Briard Plaster has an exceptional capacity of drying up and sanitizing aged walls; it protects all the building elements from possible water damage (wood, hollow blocks, cob,…), ensures its healthiness and thus, its durability.
Hence, it is particularly recommended for all the walls with a porous structure (cut stone, masonries floated with plaster, lime or mortar of fine sand, timber frame), as well as for the supports containing plaster and/or sulfates.
The absence of shrinkage during the setting makes its application very safe.
These plaster lime coatings accommodate themselves well to the always possible structure movements in old buildings.
Moreover, even when the movements of the framework cause cracks, the great porosity of the Briard Plaster prevent them from becoming infiltrating.
What is more, the plaster is the best ally of the timber-frame houses against fire hazards.

Textures and finishes

The Briard Plaster preserves the marked character of the traditional fabrication of these plasters fired in abutment kilns with wood, and coarsely crushed with a flail or the grinding stone.
One will find again these tasteful impurities: uncrushed gypsum, charcoal, faux alabaster, .. in the light and softness of the traditional coatings.
Tinted in the bulk or not, the Briard Plaster is traditionally cut finished with the berthelet (sharp rake) by the plaster mason.
It can be then patined by washing with clear water.
It can be delivered pre-mixed with exact color-matching on customer's request.

Caution

Old masonries to coat must be protected from undesirable water intrusions (streaming, back splash, water rising up by capillarity).
The covers, gutters/chêneaux, downspouts, coping of the projections, stringcourses, cornices, sills, zinc works, flaps and weatherings must ensure their role normally.
One must particularly look after the protections on the walls exposed to the dominant winds.
Degradations by back splashing at ground level are avoided by constitution of a wall base about 20 inch./ 50 cm high.

Preparatory works

In all cases, it is indispensable to scarify the former coating at least 1 inch deep, and all non-adhering elements to the support or of inferior quality. One treats all support pathologies, then one thoroughly dust off.
In the end, the support must be clean, soot, bistre or efflorescence free.
The very deeply pickaxed parts must be filled up before the coating with wire-mesh and identical material to the original.
All non-apparent wood elements must be wire-meshed before coating, as well as all surface heterogeneities ( wire-lath and galvanized nails).

Implementation

Working with lime-plaster follows the rules of the art and must respect our specifications.
Because there is lime in the mix, it is necessary to wear gloves and protective glasses.

The Plâtre Briard should not be applied below 5 °C / 41 °F, nor on a frozen or thawing support. It is necessary to insure its protection ( direct sun exposure, rain, etc...) while work is in progress and during the first week of drying (7 days). Do not apply the coating on very hot days or under direct sun. The support must be humid in depth.
It is hand-mixed with the help of a mixer in a rubber container, or can be sprayed with a machine.
It must form an homogeneous paste holding load for at least a 1 ¼ in. thick coating (10/13 l./bag).
If necessary for rough-trimming, one uses PG 30 manual, PG 100 for spraying, or "Platre Briard".
Preferably the application should be done in one coat: otherwise apply successive layers of 1 ¼ to 2 in. thick, each one with cut finish.
Then,"Platre Briard" is coated. This top finish layer must be 2.5 cm( 1 in.) thick minimum. A metal piece is sank and used for external bay angles.
One has about 2 hours to spread and adjust the product.
The setting occurs in the 2 to 3 following hours.
The finishing is done by cutting with a sharp"berthelée".It starts as soon as peels come off the tool, so then usually in the afternoon.
It is to notice that the smoothed finishing is excluded in exterior, except punctually: window framing, flat band, etc...
It can then be patined by washing with clear water.
Tinted in the mass, it is left as such.
It can also receive a periodic application of fat lime wash(CL90).
In all the cases, the coating must be protected from bad weather until its full carbonation.

Consumption

Without sand: 10 kg/m² by cm of thickness ( about 2 lbs/sqft per ½ inch. thickness in interior or 5 lbs/ sqft per inch thickness in exterior).

Preservation

4 months, away from humidity, in a dry and clean storage room.

Conditioning

55 lbs / 25 kg bags doubled paper bags, on pallets with streamers. With or without sand, original or tinted, custom-made.
